Videoton will go into the new season as champions and they will have Marko Nikolic in charge after he signed a new deal with the club.
The first day of pre-season saw manager Marko Nikolic sign a contract extension for a further year. The manager arrived at the club in June 2017 and helped Vidi to the league title in his first season in charge.
"There was never a doubt for a minute that I would not stay here and continue my work. I remember back to around a year ago when I first spoke to Zoltan Kovacs and then Istvan Garancsi. We spoke about the targets, which was non other than winning the league, which we managed to do. Now we can take the next step and think about a three year project. I would first of all like to defend the league title, and also want to win the cup. We also have ambitions in Europe and we will try to cause a surprise. We do think that it will be next summer when the club will be ready to move up to the highest level. It was for these targets that I have signed the extension. I would like to thank everybody that played their part in making this extension happen" - commented Marko Nikolic.
Zoltan Kovacs was satisfied as he commented about the contract extension. The director of football also added that the contracts of both Radoje Szmiljanic and Goran Basaric have also been extended.
"Marko Nikolic contract was originally for two years so I never understood the rumours at the end of last season with regard to whether he was staying or going. Just as in the past, we did not react to this rumours. The coaching team and team never focused with this rumours and instead concentrated on winning the league. There was never a doubt from either the club or Marko Nikolic that he would be leaving, and I can even add now that we agreed everything after our league game with Ferencvaros. We just had to finalise small details from then on. It was not winning the league title that decided whether we would extend the deal. The season will start well and we will go into pre-season as champions. Our playing squad will generally stay as it is and there is not too much time for the players to gel together with the manager. That is a big advantage for us looking ahead. There is a team togetherness that gave us lots of energy over the spring. We will shortly be moving into our new stadium and I am sure that it will give us plenty of strength. We would like to strengthen the squad further and we hope to have news shortly." - commented Zoltan Kovacs.
