Ferenc Kovacs returned as manager but he could not prevent the team fighting a relegation battle.

Ferenc Kovacs was back on the manager's bench as the new season kicked off. That would be his third period in charge of Videoton FC. Many were surprised to find out that there was no new contract offer for forward Jozsef Szabo. The same applied to Ferenc Csongradi and Lajos Majer. Although Majer returned in week 9 of the season, the supporters were baffled at the way the UEFA cup successful side was slowly being taken apart. This was especially the case with brothers Peter and Laszlo Disztl who signed for Budapest Honved and Imre Vadasz who made the move to ZTE.
There were several arrivals including defender Csaba Laszlo who came in from Debrecen. Striker Zsolt Magyar and midfielder Attila Supka were further signings in the summer months. Goalkeeper Zsolt Petry came in from MTK. Tatabanya midfielder Laszlo Emmer and defender Tamas Reichard were further strengthening. Defender Erno Toth was the final signing.
Another long wait for a win
Although many felt that manager Ferenc Kovacs would guarantee success, he could not get his new team to fire on all cylinders. This was evident with the side only picking up their first win in week 10 of the season.
The season had started with a 1-1 draw with MTK, before losing 2-0 to Debrecen and 1-0 against Honved. The continuation did not go well with 3 draws and 3 further defeats to Vasas 1-0, Haladas 4-2 and Kaposvar 3-1). The team lay in bottom play with 4 points after 9 matches. Only a better goal difference saw them just above Kaposvar in the league table.
Videoton travelled to Vac in the 10th game of the campaign. Lajos Majer sent in a free kick that Novath converted to secure an important 1-0 win. The first victory of the season! There would be just one further win in the remaining five games of the autumn. That was a 4-0 win at home against ZTE. The team ended the autumn season in 15th place and just 4 points above bottom placed Kaposvar. They won 2, drew 6 and lost 8 games to collect 11 points.

The management made plain their target for the spring season and that was to remain a first division side.
There was a 1-1 draw with MTK as the second half of the season started. Goals from Gyenti and Jonas gave Vidi a 2-0 win over Debrecen. The team then failed to score a goal in the next four games as they suffered a loss of form. Those four games resulted in two defeats with goaless draws with Raba ETO and Honved.
Week 22 resulted in an important 2-1 win over Haladas at the Sostoi. The goals that day came from Toth and Novath. The team slid into the one but last position with four draws and a 3-0 loss to Ferenvaros. There were 3 games left to play as the situation began to look serious.
Videoton won their last 2 home games as Csucsanszky and Magyar scored in the 2-0 win over Tatabanya. There was also a vital 4-3 win against Siofok. The final game of the season was a 0-0 draw with Ujpest and the point secured first division status for the following season. Overall 27 points were collected to finish in a final 11th place. That included 6 wins, 15 draws and 9 defeats.
MNK – Team make it to last 8
Videoton entered the cup at a later stage this season. Boglarlelle drew 1-1 with Vidi and ZTE were defeated 2-0 to make it through to the next round. Raba ETO were the opponents and the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the Győr side would win the return leg 3-1 to knock Vidi out.
