Season in review: 1990 - 1991

A poor autumn is followed by a stronger spring to finish in 8th place.

The club named Gyozo Burcsa as the new manager. "I had to make a quick decision as I could have continued playing in France. I have picked up good experience during my 5 years in France. I would like to put together a young and attacking side. We have targeted a 3-8 place finish with the club management.

Big changes to the squad

Zoltan Csucsanszky signed a one year contract extension together with Laszlo Emmer and Gabor Horvath. New signings included Bela Szekely from Szatmarnemeti, who signed a 3 year deal. Midfielder Imre Vadasz arrived from MTK, whle another midfielder, 25 year old Zsolt Muzsnay, joined from Steaua Bucharest. Talented keeper Attila Grof came in from Ujpest and Istvan Marton and another keeper, Laszlo Polgar were further new faces. There were even more arrivals including midfielder Istvan Salloi and Istvan Foldes. Keeper Istvan Mitring returned to the club. Midfielder Balazs Beko moved up from the youth team with Laszlo Fodor and Janos Dubecz. Two more players returned to the club in the form of Zsolt Molnar and Lajos Takacs.

There were also several departures: Gyula Csonka moved to Austria and a lower league side to continue his career. Zsolt Petry and Viorel Vancea joined Honved. Tamas Petres switched to Austrian outfit St Pölten.

Pre-season goes well

There was an international tournament as part of pre-season that summer. Opponents included Ferencvaros and Newcastle. Goals from Nemeth and Salloi secured a 2-1 over the Geordies, while Vidi made it to the final to face Ferencvaros, who came out on top following a penalty shootout.

The season starts with difficulty

The promising close season results did not continue with a tough start to the season. Vidi had to wait until week 7 to gain their first win. They also scored just 2 goals in the first 6 league matches. The breakthrough came with a 4-1 win over Budapest Volan. It was Istvan Mitring's first game in the Videoton goal.

The remaining games were a mix of wins, draws and defeats. The first big game of the season was at the end of October and a visit to Ferencvaros. There were several injuries and the manager only named his team in the final minute, but he could not prevent his side from losing 4-0. Vidi entertained Ujpest in the next match, but a taxi strike meant that the match had to be postponed. There were several milestones during November with Gabor Horvath and Imre Vadasz making their 300th appearance. Istvan Salloi also made his 100th appearance for Vidi in the month.

The autumn season came to a close with the team picking up 13 points, with 5 wins, 3 defeats and 7 draws to sit in 11th place.

Slight changes to the squad – dark clouds hover over the football club

The winter transfer season saw Jozsef Takacs leave the club and join Kazincbarcika. The club gave Laszlo Svelecz on loan to Yugoslav third division side Buducnoszt Hodosannak. In return, Videoton were given a 10 day training camp in that country. There were several departures including Laszlo Emmer who transferred to a club in Austria. Istvan Marton went to second division side Kaba.

The Videoton electronics company were on the brink of bankruptcy as the second half of the season approached. That had a major impact on the finances at the club. The budget back in 1990 for the year was 70 million forint (225,000€), but due to the difficulties, 100 million forint (325,000€) was needed. Videoton SC issued a statement about the problems on the 21st March. That resulted in 7 divisions not being able to carry on as of the 30th April 1991. The football club had sponsors from abroad until the 30th June 1991.

The spring campaign started with a 0-0 draw at home to Pecs. That was followed by defeat away at Honved and a game with MTK at the Sostoi, which ended in a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Foldes, Mariasi and Salloi. Three draws followed before a breakthrough in week 22 of the season. Volan were defeated 1-0. That was followed up by a 1-0 win against Veszprem and a 4-2 victory over Bekescsaba.

The season was coming to a close when the team took on Szeged at home. Defender Gabor Horvath was given a good send off by the home crowd after 19 years and 316 first division matches for the club. The game finished in another good 1-0 win. The team improved 3 places in spring with that of autumn. They collected 30 points with 11 wins, 8 draws and 11 loses to end the season in 8th place.
