Season in review: 1993-1994

Many changes around the club but there is no improvement and the team finish 9th.

There was no change to the team manager at the start of pre-season with Gabor Hartyani taking charge for the 1993-94 season.

The club signed 3 new players and two of them were midfielders. Andras Zombori and Laszlo Horvath arrived from Vac, while defender Zoltan Balog made the move from Pecs. The club also promoted four of its youngsters from the youth set up.

There were more departures over the summer than arrivals. Honved signed midfielder Istvan Salloi while Jaroslav Hausner joined Siofok. Istvan Foldes made the short move over to Győr as did defender Attila Kuttor  while keeper Laszlo Tokes switched to Tatabanya. On loan Zsolt Muzsnay returned to FC Antwerp with the contract of defender Zsolt Molnar coming to an end.

Poor Intertoto cup, poor start to the league

There were four games over the summer in the intertoto cup. Defeats to Bayer Uerdingen 2-1, and Odense BK 3-1, were sandwiched between a good 7-1 victory over Dunajska Streda and that meant a fourth place finish.

The season started with a 2-1 loss against Debrecen. The first win arrived in week 4 at home to Sopron by a 4-1 scoreline. The team would go on to win just three more times over the course of the autumn season. Haladas were easily beaten 5-0 with the game already decided at half time as the red and blues led 3-0. The autumn season brought 13 points with 4 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats. That secured a 9th place finish in the league table at the half way stage. Manager Gabor Hartyani commented: "I cannot and am not satisfied with the teams results or league position. Our game was at times balanced but there is still plenty for us to improve on. The positive thing is that we know what we have to improve in."

New name, new manager

The winter transfer period brought two changes to the team. Imre Vadasz ended his playing career while Robert Jovan joined the squad. The second half of the season opened with a 2-1 victory over Debrecen. However, the team then nose dived with defeats to BVSC 3-0, Sopron 1-0 and a 10th place standing in the table after 22 games. A heavy 5-1 home defeat to Honved resulted in president Bravacz Otto thinking over his position. Manager Gabor Hartyani's period in charge of the team came to an end.

Miklos Janky was given the temporary role of taking first team training, before Honved coach Laszlo Kiss took over as the new manager. His introduction went well with a 3-1 away win at Siofok. Goals from Varga, Horvath and Jonas did the damage.

The continuation did not continue in the way that many had hoped. The remaining six games brought two wins against Csepel and Bekescsaba. The team travelled to play Ferencvaros with two matches of the season remaining. It was the 50th game between the two and FTC ran out 3-0 winners in a deserved victory.

The season did not produce the performances that had been expected and just 25 points were collected through the 8 wins, 9 draws and 13 defeats to give a final 9th place finish.

No luck in the Hungarian cup....

Toponari were beaten 2-0 and there was also a 4-1 win over Sopron. However, the run came to an end with a two-legged aggregate defeat against Siofok, who made it through to the final 8.
