MOL Hungarian Cup: road to the quarter-finals

On Thursday at 20:00 our team will play at ETO Park in Győr.

In the last three seasons, our team has reached at least the semi-finals in the series called the MOL Hungarian Cup since the start of the 2020/2021 season. In 2019, our then captain Roland Juhász lifted the trophy, in 2020 we reached the semi-finals and last year the final, and on Thursday the road to the semi-finals will lead us through an old rival, ETO FC Győr.

The cup campaign started in Sopron during the current season, where we beat our NB III opponents 6-2 in an entertaining match, scoring some nice goals.

In the next round, last November, we visited Zugló, where we won 5-2 against BVSC, who were also in the third division, and Nemanja Nikolic scored his first treble in a Vidi shirt.

This February our players had a tougher task ahead of them, but with fantastic goals from Nego and Petryak and an own goal, we won 3-0 against Szeged (NB II) at the Szent Gellért Forum.

Our opponent, the currently second division ETO FC Győr, also entered the series in the third round, and they "warmed up" with a 3-0 win at home to NB III Mosonmagyaróvár.

In October, the team of former national team striker László Klausz hosted Puskás Akadémia FC, the runners-up of the OTP Bank Liga, and won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Richárd Vernes, who has plenty of NB I experience, as PAFC did not have any reserves and had their first team ready for the meeting.

In the round of eight, NB III team Nagykanizsa tried to stop them. For a long time it looked like they would succeed, but goals from young Balázs Farkas Kesző, who scored three goals in the game, turned the game around in the second half.

This has happened so far in the quarter-finals:

Kazincbarcika, the leaders of the Eastern Group of NB III, held on against Paks for a long time, but János Szabó's close-range header finally put the Paks side, who are also doing well in the NB I, through to the semi-finals. The Honvéd-FTC clash was also a good game, with Ferencváros winning 1-0 through Tokmac Nguen's goal, leaving two Green and White teams in the last four. After the third quarter-final, Újpest won 3-2 on Wednesday, before the draw for the semi-finals takes place on Thursday after the ETO-Vidi match.
